From Overweight to College Scholarship Offers – How One Determined High School Athlete Transformed His Speed, Strength And Body

From Overweight to College Scholarship Offers – How One Determined High School Athlete Transformed His Speed, Strength And Body

from overweight and overlooked to college scholarship offer - How one high school football player transformed his speed, strength and body

Reece is a "football guy" - he loves the process of rolling his sleeves up, getting dirty because he knew he it makes him better.

He's someone the coaches and team leaned on to be a leader in the locker room and on the field.

Always giving 100% effort which is why he has the school season sack record at Oakland Christian High School.

One big dream he wanted to achieve was to play college football and earn a scholarship to play football.

The problem was he didn't know where to start and wasn't the biggest, fastest or strongest guy when he went to camps.

He knew he needed a way to stand out to gain attention of college football coaches to make it look like he was eating up anyone who stood in his way.

Naturally, he knew it started with himself. Making himself bigger, faster and more physically dominant so when he attended camps, he could play the way he wanted...

There was on problem... he didn't know HOW to faster and more explosive for football.

He did all the workouts at school, he went to the gym (sometimes) on his own, but really didn't know what to do when it comes to getting faster and more explosive.

He knew he had to get coaching and training to maximize his results in the gym with the short time he had before next football season.

So he and his Mom "googled" around and stumbled upon Athletic Preparation in Auburn Hills.

If we had 4 more Reece's our team would be in a much stronger position.

They came in, shared their goals of needing to get faster, stronger and more explosive so he could play college football

We set him up with a speed, strength and conditioning training program that started him from where he was at, and then progressed to challenge him overtime.

I mean, when Reece came in, he could not do a push up with correct form (he had no core).

When Reece started training we essentially started from scratch.

Although he had done some "strength training" before at school - he didn't know HOW TO LIFT.

We took him through our training system of :

  1. Quality Movement (to make sure he has the proper technique)
  2. Progressive Overload (to build lean muscle and burn body fat)
  3. Intensification (actually train intensely to increase maximal strength and power for football)

What made Reece successful at transforming his speed, strength and power was:

  1. Highly Coachable (he wanted to get better and listened)
  2. High-Motor (he always gave amazing effort during his training sessions)
  3. Consistency (he made training a priority - he didn't accept excuses OR miss his lifts)

This made it easy for him to plug-in to our training system and achieve quick results.

Fast forward 4 months of following a strength and conditioning program of consistent speed and weight training with us and Reece made significant progress Sophmore to Junior Year.

reece's transformation ( Jan '17 - april '17)

Before > After

After his best season yet while experiencing how much faster he was on the field, how much stronger he was and how it made his work on the field so much easier

(which the opposing coaches were first to notice and commented to him after the game)

he came back after his junior year to train with us and made even more significant progress.

SOPHOMORE SEASON

SENIOR SEASON

One day during summer Reece attended a football camp down in Kentucky to get exposure to college coaches ...

He said he had some good news ...

He sent me this snapchat that a coach gave him an offer on the spot!

... and once you get one, more coaches notice which resulted him in getting 2 additional college scholarship offers.

Reece is an extremely determined football player who had a lot to prove and put in the work to achieve his dream of playing college football.

He shares one of his deep motivating factors below:

I lost my dad suddenly when I was 13 years old and through that suffering, I have realized that we all have a choice to make when life gets tough....we can either be bitter or better. And even though it is not easy sometimes, I like to chose to be better. My faith in God has shown me that good can be found in everything, even extremely difficult times. As a Captain, I try to take what I have learned and use it to encourage and support my teammates on and off the field.

Wrapping up his 2 year training career with us where we would see him 3-5 x / week, grabbing a couple college scholarship offers it was time to send him of to Concordia University where he choose to play football with fellow college teammate Josh Siminski (who also trained alongside Reece)

It was time to get him ready for summer conditioning to make a presence showing up as a freshman.

All of his hardwork and preparation paid off as he was was one of the few incoming freshman to pass the grueling conditioning tests.

REECE SHARES HIS TRAINING EXPERIENCE AND ADVICE

What made Reece bigger, faster and stronger for football were 3 things ...

1) He Had A BIG Purpose

He had a goal (play college football) that was bigger than himself.

2) Self-Awareness

He had a big goal, but he DID NOT KNOW HOW he was going to achieve it. So he hired a coach to help him bring up his weaknesses (speed, strength, body composition)

3) He Took Action...FAST!

If he said "next year" I'll get a coach, or next year I'll take football or my workouts serious ...If he "waited" who knows if he would have made as much progress to put him in a position to earn a college scholarship?

Waiting and delaying kills your goals. Athletes serious about achieving their

goals take action now and figure out the details as you go, one step at a time.
